Clean, community energy is becoming a reality in the north of Brighton
Local people are powering their homes with solar energy – at no upfront cost. Jamie Lloyd’s household was among the first in the Preston Park area to have solar panels installed as part of the project. Here he is up on his rooftop, talking you through his family’s very own solar system.
BHESCo are keen to help neighbourhoods across Sussex develop their own community solar power systems and are funding solar panels and energy storage for the Preston Park Community Energy Project. As with a regular energy company, you’ll be charged for the energy you consume. However, your electricity bills are likely to lower and will become lower still over time. Using clean, locally generated energy will protect you from price hikes caused by global events, which happened following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Who are BHESCo?
BHESCo are an award-winning energy co-operative, responsible for numerous energy projects in and around Brighton and Hove. The Brighton-based social enterprise is keen to harness the power of sustainable energy further and scale up local energy generation in residential areas.
We are excited that BHESCo is offering to work with communities such as ours, helping us take control over our energy security and generate clean electricity. We hope you’re as keen as we are to get this off the ground and become Brighton’s first zero-carbon neighbourhood.

Which streets are included?
The neighbourhoods north and to the west of Preston Park are home to many buildings with roof spaces suitable for solar panels. Homes and businesses within the area in yellow, in the map above, can join the project. This large radius offers huge potential to generate clean, renewable electricity across a large area of the city.
Joining the community energy revolution will make our neighbourhood more sustainable and energy secure, while saving us money. We’ll enjoy cheaper electricity as part of a greener, more connected community.
